Text to Emotive Gibberish Speech Tool

Context

My Honours Project for BSc Sound Design at Edinburgh Napier University (which received a first and an honourable mention award).

Summary

Inspired by the likes of Celeste and Animal crossing, I wanted to create a game development tool that allowed designers easy control over vocal emotion within 'gibberish' speech. By using this tool audio designers can circumnavigate the need to pre-record/create speech samples for each emotion.
After reviewing previous literature on vocal affect expression and encoding emotion in speech I applied my findings to the tool which is created within Unity using C#.
​The tool can accept input text, change emotion and emotional intensity based on selection, and generate the gibberish speech from any sample audio source provided. There is scope to allow users to create their own emotion presets, and for the tool to accept text from internal systems.

​I am a recent graduate of BSc Sound Design at Edinburgh Napier University, receiving a first class honours and an honourable mention award (distributed across the school of applied informatics). Although my background is mainly in game audio I have strong general programming skills and would love to work in any aspect of video game programming. With a foundation in programming and creative coding for audio from three years in the BSc Acoustics and Music Technology program at the University of Edinburgh, I decided to pivot to Sound Design to unite my technical skills with my passion for gaming.

Beyond games I'm deeply passionate about music, and  currently playing bass and guitar in multiple bands. I believe this background enriches my approach, blending technical expertise with musical intuition and creative teamwork skills.

​When I'm not working on a games project, you'll find me cooking up a storm in my kitchen, at band practice, birdwatching, or pouring hours into the latest RPG/indie/Rougelike game to catch my eye.

Isabella Strange

I play bass and handle most of the admin for Isabella Strange, a 4-piece punk/alt-rock band based in Edinburgh and Glasgow. We recently launched our debut EP 'Slick Git', check it out!

I'm heavily involved in the Weird & Wired gigs in Glasgow. Each gig has a lineup of punk and live electronic bands, resulting in a unique and energetic blend. I handle a lot of the management, logistical, and financial work.
